Sunrise 96/97 Girls Win Wellington 3v3

The team plays up and defeats two 3v3 champs on the way to the title

Wellington, Florida (July 26, 2008) - The Sting (u11) won all of four of their games to take the Wellington 3v3 championship on a burning hot day on the beautiful fields of the International Polo Grounds. The girls played in a combination u11/u12 division with a total of six entries. Two of the opponents were overmatched and Sunrise had easy victories. But the tournament was significant for the Sting because of the two other games.

One of those games, held in bracket play, was against the Tropical Soccer Orange Crush. The Crush were the u12 champions of the Miami Challenge Sports 3v3 held in April. The game was also a rematch of the MLS Futbolito finals, a close contest that Sunrise won. The game today was also close, the Sting trailed early but tied the game 3-3 at halftime. Sunrise scored twice in the second half to win 5-3.

In the finals, the team played the Palm Beach Soccer Academy Nomads. The Nomads were the u12 champions of the South Florida Miramar 3v3 Challenge. This was a very exciting game that was back and forth. The Nomads held a 4-3 lead at half time and then scored an early second half goal to make it 5-3. But Sunrise methodically regained ground and then took the lead by scoring four straight to make it 7-5. The Nomads got one back with about two minutes remaining to make it 7-6, which is how the game ended, giving the Sting the championship.
