Weekend Recap

Sunrise, Florida (February 4, 2007) -  The Sunrise girls program had a perfect weekend winning all seven matches. The record on the season in FLUGSA is now 38-6-4.

The U14 Select team closed out the regular season by winning both of their games. The Saturday game was a rivalry contest against Plantation. This was the fifth time this year that the club’s have played against each other, and like the others, Sunrise won the game by a one-goal margin. This was a great game and Sunrise scored the only goal of the game in the closing minutes on a corner kick that Kaylie Clemenza shot in. The ball hit the top of the cross bar and crossed into the net.  Plantation almost scored earlier when Courtney Walsh had a terrific shot that was stopped on an acrobatic play by the Sunrise keeper Marcella Vurro. On Sunday, Select defeated Hobe Sound 2-0. Danielle Kripitzer and Clemenza scored. Vurro picked up her second shutout of the weekend. With the weekend wins, Select finished in first place in FLUGSA with a record of 11-1-2.

The U10 Sting also finished their regular season this weekend. The girls put the finishing touch on an undefeated season with a 4-0 win over Team Boca on Friday night. Sunrise scored three goals in the first 12-minutes and then added one more in the second half for the win. The fourth goal typified the superb Sunrise passing game that was on display all night. Rylee Simons took the ball away from Boca on the defensive side of the half line towards the left touchline and passed just over the half line to Sydney Talbot who was about two feet inside the touchline. The defender tried to push Talbot towards the touchline, so Talbot took a step in that direction and then made a sharp cut to the right. She stepped about 5 yards towards the goal leaving the defender behind her and then sent the ball on a long diagonal pass all the way to the right corner of the 18 where Taylor Shore one touched the ball about 10 yards back on a square pass to the left where Brittany Simpson took a touch to the right and fired for the goal.

The U11 Sting, in the middle of a race to make the playoffs, won both of their games. The Sting defeated Boca United 4-1 on Saturday. Camilla Neveleff scored two times and Athena Saunders and Jaylie Jensen each had one.  On Sunday, the team defeated Miami Shores 5-2. Dani Westerlind and Caitlin Crespo each had two goals and Dallas Dorosy had one. The two wins improve the team’s record to 8-3. With one game remaining, Sunrise is in second place but with little room for comfort, as there are several teams just one or two games back.

The U14 Premier team also won a pair of games with wins over South Dade (6-0) and Team Boca (3-1). The team finishes the season with a record of 11-2-1.
