‘Noles Fall To Terps 2-1 Maryland scores two goals in the second
period to give Seminoles their second ACC defeat.
10/29/10
COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The eighth ranked Florida State women's soccer
team run for a second straight ACC regular season title took a big hit
as they fell 2-1 to the third ranked Maryland Terrapins on a Thursday
night game at Ludwig Field. After a scoreless first period, the
Seminoles took the lead just two minutes into the second period on a
goal by senior Janice Cayman, her team leading ninth goal of the season.
Maryland would quickly respond with two goals to give Florida State just
their second ACC defeat.
“Overall I do think our performance was
as good today as it has been recently,” said head coach Mark Krikorian.
“We didn’t keep the ball need to be successful. It looked like we were
not very sharp; we were not sharp in our passing and not sharp in our
movements and too many careless giveaways. Maryland did a good job, they
are a good team and were able to hold the ball, hold possession and
overall I would say the result was probably a fair representation of the
game. We had a few big chances, but we didn’t put them away.”
The game started out as a defensive battle, but Florida State came out
of the gates swinging in the second period as Janice Cayman scored her
team leading ninth goal during the 47th minute of the game off an assist
by junior Casey Short.
“Janice has been playing wonderful for
us,” said Krikorian. “Casey Short created a very dangerous situation to
put the ball across and Janice had good timing with a quality finish.”
Overall Florida State outshot Maryland 16-14 and finished the game
tied with five corners for each team. The Seminoles committed only six
fouls and was called for an offside’s infraction just once while
Maryland was called for only seven fouls and was never whistled
offside’s.
While the numbers suggest that the game was a close
matchup, the Florida State coaches know that for the team to win tight
matches likes this in the future they will need to perform better in
aspects that don’t show up on a stat sheet.
“Our message to the
team is the game is now over and we need to learn some lessons from it
and apply them Sunday,” said Krikorian. “Probably the most important
thing is for us to value the ball and have quality possessions off the
ball, have good supporting angles, good supporting distances and if we
do so then we will have a chance to be successful on Sunday.”
With the loss Florida State now falls to 12-4-1 on the season and 6-2-1
in ACC play while Maryland improves to 14-2-1 overall and matches FSU
with a 6-2-1 conference record.
The Seminoles will now travel to
Massachusetts to face the No. 11 Boston College Eagles on Sunday.
Following Sunday’s match the Seminoles will return home shortly before
heading to Cary, North Carolina for the ACC Tournament next weekend.
“Boston College is a very good team,” added Krikorian. “They are
another very talented, top ten team from the ACC. They have some special
players and are a good organization. We know we have our hands full
going up to Boston for our game on Sunday. Hopefully we can come back
with a better performance than we had today and if we do then we will be
successful an if we don’t then we are going to struggle.”
