Seminoles Down Wolfpack, 4-1
Florida State bounces back from UNC loss with a 4-1 victory over N.C State.

Raleigh, N.C. – Senior Janice Cayman and junior Casey Short scored two goals each to lead the No. 7 ranked Florida State women’s soccer team to a 4-1 victory over NC State at Dail Soccer Field. The Seminoles scored three goals in the second half to gain a split of their trip to the state of North Carolina after a 1-0 loss to the No. 2 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels on Thursday night.
With the win the Seminoles improve to 11-3-0 overall on the season and 5-1 in conference play. NC State is now 7-9 overall and 1-6 in ACC play.
“I thought we had a good, solid and professional performance today,” said head coach Mark Krikorian.
The game began slowly for the Seminoles, as they would not score their first goal until 35th minute when Casey Short scored her second goal of the season with a shot from ten yards out that went into the lower right corner of the Wolfpack’s goal.
“It felt really good,” said Short. “I think will give me more confidence heading into the next game.”
The lead was short lived as N.C State responded 52 seconds later with a goal of its own by Jennie Krauser who scored on a long cross, tying the game at one goal apiece.
The Seminoles and the Wolfpack would head into halftime tied 1-1.
“I don’t think we were particularly sharp in the first half,” said Krikorian. “We had to kind of grind it out, and we were happy to score the first goal, but we were disappointed in giving up the goal. We have to do better in our defending or we are going to give up chances and we are going to give up goals.”
Florida State would turn on the heat after the break as they received the game-winning goal by Casey Short in the 50th minute, her first game winning goal of the season. Short scored on a slip pass by sophomore Tiana Brockway as Short was able to punch it in on a one on one with the NC State goal keeper.
“I think Casey gave us a big lift,” said Krikorian. “We know that she is a dangerous, attacking player both through her technique and her athletic quality. She presents a number of challenges for opponents in defending her. She was on the spot, opportunistic and scored the first goal mostly on her own. The second goal she scored was through and with an awful lot of work from Tiana Brockway coming from the backline through the midfield and finding a seam to play her in and a quality finish (by Short).”
The Seminoles would continue to apply the pressure, as Cayman would score her fifth goal of the season to put the Seminoles up 3-1. Sophomore Ines Jaurena was credited with the assist.
“It felt great, but all the credit to the people who gave me the assist, they made it easy for me to put it in the goal,” said Cayman.
Cayman was not quite finished as she would score the Seminoles fourth and final goal during the 78th minute off an assist by Junior Tori Huster. With the goal and assist, Cayman and Huster are now tied for the team lead with 17 points on the season.
“Janice was busy, she was dangerous, and there were a number of other situations where she put herself in spots where she created half chances,” said Krikorian. “It’s a credit to her to for her persistence and being able to finish two chances.”
The Seminoles defense was once again strong as they held N.C State scoreless in the second period. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Wys earned her eleventh win on the season and finished with three saves.
“In the second half I thought we came out and our energy was greater, and we were able to get control of the ball, control of the game and dictate the tempo of the game,” said Krikorian.

Overall the Seminoles improve to 11-3-2 all-time against N.C State. The victory was Krikorian's sixth win over Wolfpack as the Seminoles head coach as Florida State has gone an outstanding 6-0-0 against N.C State during his tenure.

“It is always tough to come back from a loss, especially a big loss to Carolina,” said Short. “It was good how we had the right mentality coming into this game and we got the victory, so it definitely felt good.”

Florida State will return to action this coming Thursday, Oct. 21st at 7:00 p.m. to face No. 2 Virginia (10-1-1, 2-1-0 ACC) at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The Seminoles will remain at home for senior day to play the Virginia Tech Hokies on Sunday, Oct. 24th at 1:00 p.m. Both games will be televised by SunSports.
