JU women's soccer secures spot in A-Sun Semifinals with win over
Campbell, 2-0 Dolphins close regular season at UNF to determine
tournament host
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. October 14, 2010 - Extending
its five-match winning streak, the JU women's soccer team secured a spot
in the A-Sun Semifinals with a 2-0 win over Campbell on Friday night at
the Ashley Sports Complex.
The Dolphins (10-4-2, 7-1-1 A-Sun)
used two first-half goals from freshman forward Courtney Conrad and
senior forward Jelena Vrcelj to down the Camels (6-10-1, 3-6-0). Junior
goalie Alexa Rooney produced her fourth consecutive shutout with four
saves in the effort.
"This was a great team effort with high
energy," said JU head coach Brian Copham. "I'm proud of the way we
pushed through in the first half to score and how we held on during the
second half."
For the sixth straight conference game, the
Dolphins found the net first thanks to a clean strike from Conrad.
Sophomore forward Lisa Hensley played a ball through the middle of the
Camel defense, finding Conrad who took a couple steps and finished in
the middle of the goal.
JU showed impeccable timing inside the
last 10 seconds to double the score. Freshman Jensen Eifert was played
down the right wing, sent a low ball to the back post, finding Vrcelj
for a powerful finish just as time expired.
The second half saw
the green and gold create several strong opportunities but a final touch
was lacking.
With JU's win tonight, the Dolphins are guaranteed a
finish no worse than second, awarding the team a bye in the A-Sun
Quarterfinals. UNF will face Campbell on Saturday and will look to keep
pace with JU. A loss from UNF in that match will hand JU the right to
host the semifinals and finals of the A-Sun Tournament.
The
Dolphins will travel south on 9A next Friday night to face UNF in the
SunTrust River City Rumble at 7 p.m. |
