Scoreless Draw for Hatters and Spartans
10/8/10
Spartanburg, S.C. – A zero to zero draw may not have been what the
Hatters were looking for Friday night in Spartanburg, yet the visitors
did manage to extend their unbeaten streak to four games and goalkeeper
Andrea Garavaglia (Webster Groves, Mo.) registered her first shutout of
the season.
With the tie Stetson is now 6-7-1 overall and 3-2-1
in Atlantic Sun Conference play. USC Upstate improved to 3-10-1 and
1-4-1 in the league. It was the first tie of season for both squads.
"I give a lot of credit to Upstate. They played with a lot of heart
and battled all night", said Stetson head coach Julie Orlowski. "For us
it was one of those days where you put everything on net and they don't
go in. We hit two posts and I think they cleared it off the line three
times."
After 110 minutes of play Stetson finished with a 16-3
advantage in shots and led 6-3 in corner kick chances. Freshman Alyssa
Welsh (Edison, NJ) led the team with five shots and three on goal, while
senior Tessa Gavilsky (Granite City, Ill.) added five shots with two on
goal. Last week Gavilsky earned A-Sun Offensive Player of the Week
honors and Welsh was named as a College Soccer 360.com Primetime
Performer.
"We had plenty of opportunities tonight yet just
couldn't put one in. We'll take it though because every point in
conference play is a good point", said Orlowski.
Sunday the road
trip continues on to Johnson City, Tennessee for a 1:00 p.m. game with
ETSU.
