JU women's soccer clinches A-Sun Tournament berth with 3-0 win over
Lipscomb Dolphin defense scores two goals
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
October 8, 2010 - Two first-half goals put the JU women's soccer team on
track for a 3-0 victory over Lipscomb, securing an Atlantic Sun
Tournament berth on Sunday afternoon.
The win puts the Dolphins
(10-4-2, 6-1-1 A-Sun) at 19 points in A-Sun play and guarantees at least
a seventh place finish in conference, good for a spot in the tournament,
as Florida Gulf Coast is ineligible for postseason play.
Senior
defender Devon Dowell and sophomore defender Arianne Heaton each scored
in the first half for JU and senior forward Jelena Vrcelj converted a
penalty kick against the Lady Bisons (4-11-0, 0-7-0). Redshirt-junior
Liz Fink assisted on the first two goals while junior goalie Alexa
Rooney recorded her seventh shutout of the season.
"This was a
great way to cap off the weekend," said JU head coach Brian Copham.
"Lipscomb is a well-coached team that works hard and I'm proud of our
effort. It's always nice to come out with six points from a weekend."
The Dolphins started off the match with a goal in the eighth minute
on the second score in as many Sunday's for Heaton. Fink delivered a
corner into the box that took a deflection to the back post and Heaton's
one-time shot found the back of the net.
Fink delivered another
corner in the 21st minute that found the head of Dowell for the second
goal of the match. A foul in the box would open the door for Vrcelj to
score her fourth goal of the season and the third for JU.
The
Dolphins outshot the Lady Bisons, 12-7, and converted two of their six
corner chances. Rooney made three saves in the win.
JU will now
return for its final home match of the year when it faces Campbell on
Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Ashley Sports Complex.
