Steinbruch Breaks Scoring Record in Win Over No. 18 Duke
Hurricanes score two goals in game’s final two minutes in first-ever win
over Blue Devils
10/7/10
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The
University of Miami’s Brittney Steinbruch broke the school’s scoring
record with her 88th minute goal in the Hurricanes 2-0 victory over No.
18 Duke on Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Cobb Stadium.
With
her sixth goal of the season, Steinbruch broke Britney Butcher’s
(2001-04) all-time scoring record. The Wyckoff, N.J. native already owns
the program record for goals scored at 34, after Thursday night’s
performance she currently has 75 career points.
“It was such a
great finish to a tough match,” said Steinbruch of her record-breaking
goal. “I’m just happy that we got the win and it took a complete team
effort to do it. Without Vikki [Alonzo] making great saves and our
backline playing as well as it did, I would never have had that
opportunity to score.”
Soon after the Steinbruch goal, Tara
Schwitter found the back of the net for the second time this season on a
Hurricane counter-attack led by Ali Brennan. The goal came with just one
second remaining in the match.
The win was the first in program
history against Duke (6-4-3, 0-3-1 ACC). Miami had only drawn a tie in
the first six meetings between the teams.
“Any time you get a
win in the ACC it’s a good feeling,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro.
“But, when you get a win over a conference opponent that you have never
beaten, it adds a bit more to it.”
At first glance, the stat
sheet favored Duke as the visiting team fired 17 shots to just seven for
Miami (8-3-1, 2-1-0 ACC). However, the second half really belonged to
the ‘Canes as they recorded all seven of their shots in the final period
- with five of them on goal.
The Hurricane defense was stellar
all night, with Alonzo making eight saves for her fifth shutout of the
season and senior Brittney Macdonald turning away almost all of Duke’s
scoring opportunities.
The Hurricanes, joined by the Sylvester
Comprehensive Cancer Center waived the price of admission for the 816
fans in attendance for the dramatic match. However, donations were
collected to help benefit breast cancer research at the University of
Miami’s Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute.
The pink jerseys
the ‘Canes wore during the game will be auctioned off on
HurricaneSports.com, with those proceeds going to breast cancer research
as well. Click here for more information on how to participate in the
auction.
Miami returns to the pitch this Sunday to take on No. 22
Wake Forest at 12 p.m. at Cobb Stadium.
