JU women's soccer completes weekend sweep, downs ETSU on Senior Day,
3-0 Dolphins score eight goals on the weekend
JACKSONVILLE,
Fla. October 3, 2010 - Home matches continue to be the bread and butter
of the JU women's soccer team as it defeated ETSU, 3-0, on Senior Day at
the Ashley Sports Complex to complete a weekend sweep.
The
Dolphins (8-4-2, 4-1-1 A-Sun) are now 5-0-2 when playing at home and
used 21 shots on the day to top the Buccaneers (6-5-1, 2-3-0).
Redshirt-sophomore Liz Fink tallied yet another goal from outside the
box, her third of the weekend, while sophomore defender Arianne Heaton
scored the first goal of her collegiate career from 30 yards out.
Sophomore forward Lisa Hensley rounded out the match for the Dolphins
with a goal in the second half, playing a part in every JU goal on the
day. Junior goalie Alexa Rooney and freshman Sarah Sierra split time in
the net to combine for the seventh team shutout of the year.
"It
was a great effort from everyone today on Senior Day," said JU head
coach Brian Copham. "We've had a great weekend and it's been nice to
have so many families here for the games. I want to thank the seniors
again for all of their hard work and dedication to the program."
It was a dream start for the Dolphins as Liz Fink put her side on the
board with her third goal from outside the box in two games. After
Hensley made her way through two defenders, she played a ball to Fink
who pulled to the top of the box and fired a shot into the lower right
corner of the goal.
The score would double for the green and gold
on the first goal of Heaton's career. Hensley picked up her second
assist of the match when she played Heaton back on the right wing and
the sophomore's shot from 30 yards out found the back of the net.
The second half began just as the first with the Dolphins getting on
the board early. After a corner was cleared out, a ball was played back
into the box and found its way to the feet of Hensley. The sophomore
turned in traffic and pushed a ball past keeper Megan Masch for the
third goal of the match and her third and fourth point.
The
Dolphins outshot the Buccaneers, 21-10, and made use of their shots on
goal, putting three of the four in the net.
Prior to today's
match, seniors Emme Graham, Tamara Cormier, Jelena Vrcelj, Liza
Grimsgaard, Sian Senior, Reba Stott and Devon Dowell were all
recognized.
The Dolphins will embark on their longest trip of the
season when they head up to Nashville, Tenn. to take on Lipscomb and
Belmont before returning home for their final two matches of the regular
season.
