FAU Women’s Soccer Falls in OT at South Alabama

(October 1, 2010) – The Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team
could not complete a comeback in falling 4-3 in overtime to the
University of South Alabama on Friday night in Mobile. The loss snaps
a three-match winning streak for the Owls. FAU stands 3-7 on the season
and 2-1 in Sun Belt Conference action. The Jaguars improve to 4-7-1 and
2-1 in league action. Trailing 3-0 with nearly 20 minutes left in
regulation, FAU mounted a charge to force overtime. Sophomore forward
Allison Griffin began the comeback with a goal in the 70th minute after
an initial shot by sophomore midfielder Jamie Greany was stopped by the
Jaguars’ goalkeeper Melissa Drish. The Owls cut the deficit to 3-2
when freshman forward Jesse Shugg found the back of the net after passes
from sophomore defender Emily Kelly and Griffin. Shugg leads the team
with five goals. FAU evened the match on another goal by Griffin with
just under three minutes remaining. The goal is the fourth of the season
for the Palm Bay, Fla. native and the fourth in the last two matches. It
was set up by a crossing pass from freshman forward Marisa Russo to the
left side of the formation. Tina Schaar scored the game-winning goal
for South Alabama with 51 seconds remaining in the first overtime
session. Kasey Crowe accounted for the Jaguars’ first two goals, in the
27th and 63rd minutes, and Snavely put the hosts ahead 3-0 with a tally
by Kristin Thacker in the in the 70th minute. FAU outshot the Jaguars
by a slim 18-17 margin, including a 12-6 advantage in the second half.
Shugg had a game-high five shots, with three shots being on goal.
Griffin added three shots while senior defender Janelle Blake, senior
forward Laura Hyvonen and freshman midfielder Camille Namba recorded two
shots in the match. The Owls will continue the Alabama road trip on
Sunday, October 3 when it battles rival Troy University at 1 p.m.
