Hatters Blast Camels in Buies Creek
9/23/10
Buies
Creek, N.C. – The Hatters offense came to life with four goals leading
to a 4-1 win over Campbell (4-6-1, 1-2-0) Thursday night in Buies Creek.
Stetson (4-7-0, 1-2-0) picked up its first win in the past four games
and first conference victory of 2010.
After a scoreless first
half freshman Alyssa Welsh (Edison, NJ) started the Hatter barrage in
the 52nd minute. She started a give-and-go with a pass left to Courtney
Jenista (Pensacola, Fla.) who then returned a one-touch back to the
freshman who ripped a shot lower left from 20 yards out center for her
first career goal.
Just over five minutes later the Hatters
struck again when Kristen Higel (St. Augustine, Fla.) delivered her
first goal of the season and second of her career. She caught the Camels
off balance and blasted a free kick past the keeper and into the net on
the right side from 35 yards out.
Jenista tallied her Atlantic
Sun Conference leading 5th goal of the season in the 61st minute after
being sent inside two yards by Tessa Gavilsky (Granite City, Ill.). The
scoring play elevated both Jenista and Gavilsky into a first place tie
in A-Sun scoring with 11 points each. Gavilsky sits alone atop the
league with five assists.
Stetson's final goal was the result of
a scramble inside the box. Senior Natalie Simon (Lauderhill, Fla.)
picked up her own rebound off Camel backup keeper Ryann Torrero and
slipped it home for her second of the season.
Stetson goalkeeper
Andrea Garavaglia (Webster Groves, Mo.) was in excellent form turning
away six shots on goal. She lost her bid for a shutout when Lauren
Kuklenski scored with an assist to Kaili Terry in the 80th minute.
Campbell finished with 15 shots to 10 for Stetson and the Camels held a
10-5 advantage in corner kicks.
After six consecutive road games
during the month of September the Hatters finally return home to the
Stetson Soccer Complex for a 7:00 p.m. game against conference-leading
Kennesaw State on Friday, October 1.
