UCF Women’s Soccer Earns a 1-1 Draw at Arizona Reis registers a
season-high seven saves for the Knights.

TUCSON,
Ariz. (UCFAthletics.com) – Katie Jackson’s (Satellite Beach, Fla.)
first-half goal allowed the UCF women’s soccer team to record a 1-1 tie
at Arizona Friday at the Cats Classic Presented by Loews Ventana Canyon
Resort. The Knights moved their record to 4-2-1 while the host Wildcats
saw their record push to 2-3-2.
UCF goalkeeper Aline Reis
finished with a season-high seven saves, highlighted by three in the
first overtime session alone.
“That was a really hard-fought game
but it was a tale of two halves,” said head coach Amanda Cromwell. “The
first half was one of the best teams I’ve coached and the second half
was completely different. We didn’t finish some of our chances early and
then came out flat in the second half. You can’t do that against a good
team. We had eight corner kicks and some were dangerous yet it was
frustrating not to capitalize.
“Aline made a great save on a
penalty kick, Bianca Joswiak played very well in the back, Kim Newsome
was strong on the attack and Katie was consistent in the center-mid. But
we need everyone to play well for the entire match.”
The first
shot of the match that was placed on goal would put UCF ahead 1-0 in the
16th minute. Following a shot from Joswiak that was blocked in front,
Jackson scooped up the rebound and placed it in the back of the net for
her third goal of 2010. Nicolette Radovcic also earned an assist for her
first point of the year.
Taking a 1-0 lead into the second half,
UCF fell victim to a foul in the 18, allowing Arizona to earn a penalty
kick chance in the 53rd minute. However Reis kept the Wildcats off the
board by saving Jazmin Ponce’s attempt. Yet less than five minutes later
the home team did eventually draw even with the Knights as Ana Montoya
tallied her second of the season in the 58th minute.
Both
programs would generate scoring chances late in the second half,
including a shot off the crossbar by Radovcic in the 76th minute as well
as shots by Newsome and Tishia Jewell that were saved by Arizona keeper
Ashley Jett. But with neither team getting the go-ahead goal, play
reached overtime where Reis amassed three saves in the first 10-minute
period.
In the final 10 minutes of overtime, Reis recorded one
more save to allow the Black and Gold to complete the 1-1 tie.
The Knights will conclude this weekend’s tournament Sunday when they
face No. 19 Arizona State at 1:30 p.m. ET.
