Steinbruch Sets Scoring Mark in Miami Win
Senior Scores Two in Home-Opening Victory

CORAL GABLES – Miami Hurricanes’ senior Brittney Steinbruch scored two goals in a 3-1 win over the visiting Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in the ‘Canes home-opener, Tuesday night at Cobb Stadium.

The Wyckoff, N.J. native set the school record on the first of three Miami goals that occurred in just over a three-minute span. Her 30th and 31st career goals passed UM great Britney Butcher’s (2001-04) mark of 29.

The record-breaker came in the 59th minute. Steinbruch collected a Kelley Griffin pass 15 yards in front of the goal and her shot passed by the keeper into the left side of the net.

Steinbruch said of her accomplishment, “It was exciting. My parents were here and I’m happy that they were able to see it, but it was even better because we got a win in our home-opener.”

A minute-and-a-half later, Jordan Roseboro was in the right place as she smoked a rebound off a Lauren Singer shot.

Steinbruch extended her record 40 seconds after Roseboro’s score as she picked up a Florida Gulf Coast turnover in front of the goal and buried another shot into the left side.

The Eagles got on the board in the 88th minute when Amanda Goble scored on a penalty kick.

Early in the match, Vikki Alonzo saved a penalty kick, the second time in as many games that she accomplished the feat.

From the start of the game, it was obvious that head coach Tricia Taliaferro wanted her team to push the tempo and keep the ball in the FGCU end. With the Miami backline consistently in the offensive side of the field, the ‘Canes fired 28 shots – compared to only six for the visitors.

“It was a good home opener and I am happy with the three goals in four minutes,” said Taliaferro. “Brittney did a great job handling the pressure of trying to score a goal to make her Miami's all-time leading goal scorer.”

Prior to the season, the Hurricanes teamed-up with UM alum Kristen Kenney’s MALAIKA FOR LIFE organization in Scoring Goals to Save Lives. The premise of the initiative sees the soccer program donate $10 to the charity for every goal scored throughout the season. UM’s three goals on the night increased this season’s total to $110.

Miami will next play in Florida Gulf Coast’s Tournament on Friday and Sunday, Sept. 3rd and 5th in Ft. Myers, Fla. The Hurricanes will face Arkansas on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Kent State on Sunday at 11 a.m.
