JU women's soccer drops match to Clemson, 3-1 Fink scores for
second consecutive game CLEMSON, S.C. August 22, 2010 - The JU
women's soccer team scored an early goal for the second straight game
but couldn't hold onto the lead, conceding three straight goals and
falling to Clemson, 3-1, at Historic Riggs Field. Redshirt-junior Liz
Fink scored the lone goal for the Dolphins (1-1) from a free kick, her
second goal in as many games. The green and gold were outshot by the
Tigers (2-0), 25-13, including a 16-5 margin in the second half. "We
played well at times but we're going to have to find a way to sustain a
high level of play," said JU head coach Brian Copham. "Clemson's an
athletic team and you can't give them too many opportunities. This will
be a good week for us to regroup and get ready for another weekend in
South Carolina." The Dolphins picked up where they left off against
Furman on Friday night, scoring their second straight goal inside the
first 15 minutes. The visitors won a free kick just outside the area and
Fink buried the set piece for her second goal of the season, giving JU
the early advantage. The lead would prove to be short lived, however,
as the Tigers scored twice in a span of two minutes to get on top with
the first coming in the 23rd minute on an own goal off a driven ball
into the box. A shot from the far corner of the 18-yard box by Maddy
Elder would find its way past Rooney into the back of the net to put
Clemson up, 2-1. JU finished the half with eight shots, three on goal
while Rooney made five of her nine saves. The visitors struggled to
find pace in the second half, conceding a third goal 15 minutes in as
Elder would find the net again when she took a pass from Jackie Dutton
and slid a shot by Rooney for the last score of the game. Freshman
forward Courtney Conrad led JU with four shots, two on goal. JU was
unable to convert on any of its eight corner kicks. The Dolphins will
hit the road again next weekend and make the now familiar trip back
north to South Carolina when they face The Citadel in Charleston at 4
p.m. on Friday.
