7/10/10

Bogota, Colombia – The FIFA U-20 Women’s 2010 World Cup descends upon Germany in just a week from now and Lynn University will be represented with the selection of Melissa Ortiz to the Colombian national team. Of the 21 players selected, Ortiz is one of four active in the United States.

Colombia’s team won the South American championship in Bucaramanga, securing a spot in the 16-team World Championship for the first time. In Europe, the girls face opposition from France, host Germany and Costa Rica in Group A. Their first competition will be against France on July 13.

A junior forward out of Wellington, Fla., Ortiz has been the leading scorer for the Fighting Knights the past two seasons, totaling 31 goals and 18 assists for 80 points, while leading the Sunshine State Conference in goals and points last year and tying for the goals lead as a freshman.

This will be the fifth time the U-20 Women’s World Cup has been held since its creation in 2002. The tournament is organized every even-year with the United States holding the reigning title.
