Fire go undefeated at CASL
November 22, 2009 - Sunrise Fire 92/93 attended one of the top girls
college showcase events this past weekend in Raleigh, NC. Sunrise Fire finished
as the only U17 girls team from Florida to go 3-0, while giving every
player several minutes of playing time to be seen by the over 100 college
coaches that watched them play over the three day event.
Sunrise opened the event vs. Middlepath FC extreme from New
York on Friday with a 2-1 victory. Both Haleigh Stremanos and Dara Spital
scored to put the game away early. Sad news from the first match was GK, Becca
Rogers getting hurt in the 80th minute leaving Sunrise without a goalie the
remainder of the event.
Saturday was the biggest match up for Sunrise vs. a higher
ranked Cincinnati United Premier. This also brought out over 70 college coaches
to witness one of the most exciting matches in the entire tournament. Dara
Spital opened the scoring off a great pass by Sarah Motta. Sarah then got into
the scoring column scoring a perfect volley off a Haleigh Stremanos corner kick
putting Sunrise up 2-0. then back came Cincinnati scoring a goal in the 70th
minute to tighten the match 2-1. With the Sunrise keeper out of the tournament
coach Gus Camacho inserted Haleigh Stremanos into goal the first half, she
played great, but that was bettered by super-sub goalie 5'2" Anastasia Mesa who
stopped a PK in the 76th minute, her efforts were then trumped by Defender
Kaitlyn Manning flying across the goal blocking a driven ball that was heading
for an empty net to preserve the victory in the 78th minute!!
Sundays match featured a top team from Canada - United
Juventus '93. Dara Spital scored the only goal needed to hold off the much
bigger Canadian team. As Sunrise won both the match and the bracket going a
perfect 3-0. Many girls played their hearts out and displayed a style of soccer
that had many college coaches calling Coach Camacho all Sunday night and into
Monday morning.
