Final pairings set at the US Youth Soccer Region III Championships

Only one defending National Champion advances to finals, the Under-18
Girls Dallas Texans 91 Red. Under-16 Boys Dallas Texans 93 Red look to
defend their Region III title.
Georgia and North Texas advance five teams each, North Carolina and
Oklahoma advance four teams each, South Carolina and South Texas each
advance two and Alabama and Florida are represented by one team each
FRISCO, Texas (June 23, 2009) – Teams have earned berths in the final
matches at the US Youth Soccer Region III Championships in Frisco,
Texas. The winners of tomorrow’s games will qualify for the US Youth
Soccer National Championships in Lancaster, Mass., July 21-26, at
Citizens Bank Fields at Progin Park.
Only one defending US Youth Soccer Region III Champions have the
opportunity to win back-to-back titles tomorrow, the Under-18 Girls
Dallas Texans 91 Red. Tomorrow, they face off against Edmond ESC 91
Black. Edmond’s Amy Grow earned a hat trick today to advance her team to
the finals.
Ricardo Garbanzo scored twice for CESA 92 Premier (SC) in their 2-0 win
over Eclipse Premier (S-TX) in one boys’ Under-16 semifinal. Garbanzo’s
goals came in the 22nd and 47th minutes. CESA will face Dallas Texans 93
Red (TX-N), who scored a 3-2 win over Florida Rush Nike (FL) in the
group’s other semifinal.
In one Under-17 Boys semifinal, Triangle United (NC) got a goal from
McAmos Paye in the 90th minute to keep their match with ESC 92 Black
(OK) from reaching overtime. Paye had previously scored in the 48th
minute before ESC tied it off a Brian Byers goal in the 72ndminute.
Triangle will face Lonestar 92B Red (S-TX) in tomorrow’s final after
they defeated LSC 92 Gamblers 4-2 in the other semifinal.
The Under-19 Boys semifinal between AFC Lightning Premier (GA) and
Dallas Texans Houston 90 Red (S-TX) remained scoreless for the first 40
minutes. However, in the 41st minute, David Flores scored for Texans and
that goal was the deciding tally in their 1-0 win. NASA 08 Elite (GA)
advanced in the other semifinal on penalty kicks. Solar 90 (TX-N) scored
first when Joseph Cooper found the back of the net in the 27th minute,
but NASA’s Jahbari Willis scored just before the end of regulation.
After two scoreless overtimes, NASA prevailed on PKs, 4-3.
Four minutes in, the Under-17 Girls semifinal between GSA Phoenix 92 Red
(GA) and Sting 92 (N-TX) was tied 1-1. Sting went up early when Randi
Soldat scored four minutes in. Three minutes later, Phoenix answered,
courtesy of a Taylor Gates goal. A tally by GSA’s Nicole Locandro in the
32nd minute was the game winner. Phoenix will face AFC Lightning 92
White (GA) in tomorrow’s final after Lightning defeated 91 Triangle FC
Navy (NC) 5-2 in the other U17G semifinal.
Amy Grow had a hat trick for Edmond ESC 91 Black (OK) as they defeated
Sting 91 (TX-N) 3-1 in one Under-18 Girls semifinal. Ellen Scarfone had
the lone goal for Sting in the 76th minute. ESC will now face Dallas
Texans 91 Red in tomorrow’s final. Texans got a pair of scores from
Kimberly Castleberry in their 3-0 win over Lonestars SC 91 Red (S-TX).
Two North Texas teams battled in one semifinal of the Under-19 Girls
division. Sting 90 (N-TX) and D’Feeters 90 (N-TX) were tied 2-2 through
regulation and two overtimes, so it went to penalties. D’Feeters
advanced 3-2 on kicks. Sting took an early lead when Dawn Ward found the
back of the net in the 18th minute. D’Feeters drew things level thanks
to Katherine Wright in the 54th minute and went ahead 2-1 in the 93rd
when Jazmyne Avent scored. Six minutes later, Sting’s Rachel Shipley
scored to tie things up again. D’Feeters will face BUSA 90 (AL) in
Wednesday’s final. BUSA got a goal from Tiffini Turpin in the 47th
minute and beat TopHat 08 Gold (GA) 1-0.

Tomorrow’s regional winners of the Under-14 through Under-19 age groups
earn a berth to the 2009 US Youth Soccer National Championships to be
played in Lancaster, Mass., July 21-26 at Citizens Bank Fields at Progin
Park.
The James P. McGuire Cup is the oldest trophy in youth sports dating
back to 1935 with the inaugural youth championships. The Under-19 Boys
National Champion will hoist the McGuire Cup. This is the 74th
anniversary of the storied cup.
