CORAL GABLES, FL (August 31, 2008) – A pair of second half goals
propelled the University of Miami past Florida Atlantic 2-0 Sunday
afternoon at Cobb Stadium.
Miami (3-0) has won three-straight home matches to begin its 2008
season, having beaten FAU, Florida International and Stetson.
Florida Atlantic (1-2) held the Hurricanes scoreless through 56 minutes
and forward Ashley Mannarino nearly netted a free kick early in the
first half.
It was UM freshman Ashley Burt’s first collegiate goal which broke the
scoreless tie 12 minutes into the second half. The Saddle River, N.J.
native took a shot from the right goal line that deflected off a FAU
defender before hitting the far post into the goal.
Mannarino’s free kick, which was swatted away by UM keeper Vikki Alonzo,
was the Owls’ best scoring opportunity, managing five shots compared to
Miami’s 16.
With eleven minutes remaining in regulation a couple touch and go passes
by the UM offense led to Brittney Steinbruch’s goal from the top of the
penalty box.
The Owls have two full weeks to prepare for its next match, a September
14th date with Eastern Michigan. EMU and FAU are set to play at FAU
field on Sunday, September 14th at 12 p.m.
