TAMPA - The No. 18 University of South Florida men’s soccer team upset
the No. 8 Maryland Terrapins 2-1in a final tune-up for the regular
season at Ludwig Field.
“It was a good game for us,” said head coach George Kiefer. “Maryland
did a good job in the first half that exposed problems for us and in the
second half we made some adjustments. Our guys did a good job and it was
nice to come back at Maryland and get the result on the road but we
still have a lot of work to do.”
In the 15th minute of the game, Maryland scored it first goal coming
from a header from Terrapin Jason Herrick. USF did not record a shot on
goal in the first half.
The Bulls came charging in the second half, outshooting Maryland 5-2.
After Herrick received a yellow card, USF took full advantage when
senior midfielder Kevon Neaves put it into the back of the net. No more
than two minutes later the Bulls went ahead when sophomore midfielder
Bernardo Anor received a cross from junior midfielder Armante Marshall
that was tabbed into the upper right of the goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Canard shutout the Terrapins in the second
half recording two saves.
USF finished preseason 1-0-2 and gained their first victory in their all
time series against Maryland, prior to being 0-2-0 against them.
The Bulls entered Friday's matchup with a pair of ties this preseason,
matching the University of Tampa, 0-0, and the U-17 Venezuelan team,
1-1.
