JU women's soccer falls in season opener to College of Charleston, 2-0
Cougars score a goal in both halves to secure win
Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Aug. 22, 2008 The JU women's soccer team traveled
more than four hours away to avoid the problems of Tropical Storm Fay,
but ran into some different trouble in South Carolina as College of
Charleston scored in each half to down the Dolphins, 2-0, in the 2008
season opener on Friday night.
Senior midfielder Megan Manthey dished out both assists to help the
Cougars (1-0) secure in win. The Dolphins (0-1) were held to only five
shots on the night, with senior Keri Zwikker recording three of them.
"We can out flat tonight," said JU head coach Brian Copham. "Charleston
has a very athletic and attacking team. Coach (Kevin) Dempsey did a good
job with that squad.
"We did some things well, but will need to improve some other areas for
us to be more successful."
The Cougars wasted no time welcoming freshman goalie Alexa Rooney to the
collegiate game with three shots in less than 10 minutes to start the
match. The third shot from Christy Barrow landed past Rooney to give the
Cougars a 1-0 lead.
Following the goal, the Dolphins were able to get only one shot off
before the end of the half as Devin Dowell's attempt was saved by Sarah
Wiggers.
Zwikker had two chances in the final 15 minutes of the second half to
put the Dolphins on the board, but one shot went high and the other was
knocked down by Wiggers.
Hope Atkinson gave the Cougars' insurance by adding her first goal of
the season at the 86-minute mark, while Wiggers saved a shot from Katie
Orr less than a minute later to secure the win.
Wiggers (1-0) recorded three saves to earn her first victory between the
posts. Despite the loss, Rooney (0- 1) tallied seven stops on 18 shots
in her first collegiate start for the Dolphins.
The Dolphins are tentatively scheduled to wrap up the weekend at Flagler
on Sunday. Kickoff set for 7 p.m.
