JU names Brian Copham as head women's soccer coach
Former Samford assistant named fifth coach in program history
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Jan. 17, 2008 In his eight years as an assistant
coach at Samford University, Brian Copham helped the Bulldogs win four
conference championships and make two NCAA tournament appearances,
including a trip to the second round in 2005.
Copham now has an opportunity to build his own program as he was named
JU's head women's soccer coach by director of athletics Alan Verlander.
"We are excited about Brian leading our women's soccer program," said JU
director of athletics Alan Verlander. "He has a wealth of experience and
relates well to the student-athletes. I look forward to great things
from our women's soccer team under Brian's leadership."
At Samford, Copham assisted in recruiting five straight top 20 classes
in the Southeast region according to Soccer Buzz Magazine. Four of the
last five classes were ranked nationally, including the 2007 class that
placed 68th in the country.
"I'd like to thank Alan Verlander and Dr. Kerry Romesburg for the
opportunity to lead the women's soccer program," said Copham. "I am
excited about the opportunity to recruit student-athletes to this
excellent University in a great city. There is a talented group of
players currently here and they, along with myself, are looking forward
to starting the spring season. I'd like to thank my former boss Todd
Yelton for his direction, encouragement and support as I take on this
new venture."
As an athlete, Copham played three seasons for the top-25 ranked UAB and
received the Coaches' Award in 1998. Also a success in the classroom,
Copham received numerous academic awards, including being named to the
Commissioner's Honor Roll several times.
Copham played with a Birmingham semiprofessional soccer team, the
Alabama Saints, during the 1998 season.
Along with his collegiate coaching duties, Copham has served on the
Alabama Olympic Development Program staff for the last five years. He
has earned his USSF "A" license, along with the NSCAA Goalkeeper 1
license. Copham, who was born in Seminole, Fla., graduated from UAB with
a degree in civil and environmental engineering in 1999 and completed
