JU women's soccer suffers last
minute loss to Northern Colorado
Zwikker becomes fourth leading scorer in JU history
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Sept. 23, 2007
Northern Colorado sophomore forward Laura Engel shocked JU with a
game-winning goal with only 47 seconds left in regulation Sunday at
Jackson Sports Complex.
With the game looking destined for overtime and the Dolphins attacking,
sophomore forward Jessica Zimmerman started the counter attack for the
Bears and fed Engel who unleashed an unstoppable drive, giving Northern
Colorado the victory.
Right now we are finding ways to lose instead of finding ways to win,"
said JU head coach Chris Kouns. "That has to change before we head into
conference play next week. The girls played better today, it was a much
better showing than Wyoming and it was a much more even game, both teams
had their chances."
The Dolphins had taken the lead in the 50th minute after a ball from
senior defender Louisa Ward gave junior forward Keri Zwikker to score
her 7th of the season and 31st of her career - moving her in sole
possession of fourth place in goals in JU history.
It took the Bears only two minutes to level the score, through a goal
from sophomore midfielder Sydney Vander Velde.
"I am not sure exactly what the difficulty of holding the lead is for
the first five minutes, but obviously it falls on me," Kouns said. " As
far as we see it, everyone in the conference is 0-0 - everybody has the
same record. Everything we have done at this point is to prepare us for
the conference, and hopefully through our trials and tribulations we are
now ready to go."
The Dolphins begin their conference schedule against USC Upstate on
Friday in Spartanburg, S.C. at 7:00 p.m.
