JU's women's soccer team fell to Baylor in their first game of the Kick
Out Cancer Tournament at the Ashley Sports Complex.
"I was extremely proud of our team tonight," said JU head coach Chris
Kouns. "We played an athletic and well coached opponent and played them
toe to toe. We have two breakaways with their goalkeeper and created two
more open goal back post chances. We simply did not finish our chances."
The Dolphins started the brighter of the two teams and were rewarded in
the 10th minute after freshman midfielder Elizabeth Fink unleashed a
drive from 25 yards out after receiving a pass from junior forward Keri
Zwikker.
Baylor responded with four unanswered goals including two from freshman
midfielder Lotto Smith in the 22nd minute and 66th minute respectively.
Junior midfielder Carolyn Lynch scored in the 27th minute and senior
midfielder Jessica Hutton scored in the 33rd.
Zwikker looked to bring the Dolphins back into the game with a goal in
the 71st minute, but senior defender Megan Sherrell, who also had two
assists, put things away for the Bears in the 86th minute, ending the
game by the final score of 6-2.
"We have seen both Indiana and Baylor early in the season and both have
made us better," Kouns said. "All we need to do is keep learning and
come A-Sun Conference schedule we will be in a good position to have a
positive season."
The opening game of the Kick Out Cancer Tournament between Coastal
Carolina and Stetson ended in a 1-1 tie after double-overtime. Senior
midfielder Amanda Gelsimino opened the scoring for the Chanticleers in
the 11th minute, with senior forward Sarah Stock equalizing for the
Hatters in the 20th minute.
