Women's soccer hosts Fourth
Annual Kick Out Cancer Tournament
Baylor, Coastal Carolina, and Stetson to compete this weekend at the
Ashley Sports Center
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Sept. 6, 2007
The JU women's soccer teams hosts the Fourth Annual Kick Out Cancer
Tournament this weekend at the Ashley Sports Complex and will donate
proceeds from the event to cancer research.
"We are also anxious to make a more immediate impact on the fight
against cancer with our tournament donation, said Kouns. "At the
conclusion of the tournament, we will turn in half gate receipts and all
of the donations collected at the tournament. To put it simply, it takes
money to carry on the fight and defeat this disease."
The tournament will kick off Friday at 5 p.m. at with Stetson taking on
Coastal Carolina. JU will complete the opening day at 7 p.m. against
Baylor. Action will resume on Sunday with Stetson facing Baylor at noon
and JU squaring off against Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m.
"We are very excited about the three teams participating in the Kick Out
Cancer Tournament this weekend," said JU head coach Chris Kouns.
"Outside of the excellent soccer competition we hope that the players
and coaches on these teams will proudly wear their Kick Out Cancer
t-shirts and throughout their travels. If they cross the country wearing
our cause on their backs, and that encourages people to ask them about
the tournament, it will bring more notice to the fight against cancer
and the tournament will be even more of a success."
The Dolphins (1-1) come in after splitting two games last weekend. They
opened the 2007 season with a 4- 2 victory over Presbyterian before
falling in double- overtime thriller to Indiana, 4-3. Junior forward
Keri Zwikker led the way for the Dolphins, scoring four goals and adding
an assist en route to being named a top performer in the Atlantic Sun
Conference. Freshman midfielder Elizabeth Fink is second on the team in
points, scoring one goal and adding two assists.
Baylor is undefeated in their three games this season, coming in with a
2-0-1 record. Junior forward Amanda McGrath leads the way for head coach
George Van Linder's squad, scoring one goal and adding three assists
this season for the Bears.
For Coastal Carolina, senior midfielder Ashleigh Gunning has provided
all the scoring for the Chanticleers with two goals this season. Head
coach Rohan Naraine's squad will look to rebound after an 0- 2 start,
though one of their losses came to No. 20 Clemson.
Stetson (1-0), who will not face the Dolphins this weekend, opened the
2007 season with a 3-2 win over Presbyterian. Senior forward Sarah Stock
scored two goals for head coach Julie Orlowski's squad.
"In terms of soccer it is a great weekend for fans to come out and
watch," Kouns said. "Anytime you have teams who made the Big 12
Tournament, the Big South Tournament and the A-Sun Tournament
championship, it is going to be good soccer.
"It is also an excellent chance to see the way that teams from other
parts of the country play the game. The ultimate goal for everyone is to
make the NCAA tournament and this is just the type of playing
environment which can help us prepare for that experience."
