Wellington Boys Win State Cup

5/20/07

From the start of this years soccer season the Wellington Wave U15 boys have been on a mission. Sunday was mission accomplished! With a victory over the reigning state champs, Clearwater Soccer Club, Wellington has achieved everything that they set out to do by becoming the new Florida State Champions. The team met a very tough competitor in the final game and found themselves down by 2 goals in the beginning of the second half. They did not cave in to the pressure but rose up to the occasion by pulling together as a team and putting a lot of pressure on their opponents. In a 15 minute span, the boys strung together 3 spectacular goals to put them ahead. Not to be denied, Clearwater closed the gap with a tying goal with 10 minutes to go. Neither team was able to finish their chances and the game went on to double overtime. The battle continued but without a score from either club. The victory was solidified in penalty kicks with 3 out of 4 converting their pk's and two great saves by the Wellington goalie. This ending did not overshadow the success of a tremendous team effort, with a never say die attitude. This achievement was especially sweet as it is a first State Championship for a young Wellington Club and a statement of what is yet to come.
